Ciclo Suggia

“Ciclo Suggia” is a series of cello concerts dedicated to celebrating the memory of the distinguished Porto cellist Guilhermina Suggia, under the artistic direction of cellists Vanessa Pires and Filipe Quaresma. It aims to keep alive the memory of one of the most remarkable Portuguese female figures of all time and to maintain the city’s connection to her legacy. In 1902, Suggia became the first female soloist to perform at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany, marking a pioneering career that paved the way for future generations of female cellists. Alongside Pablo Casals, with whom she had a close relationship between 1906 and 1913, she was considered one of the greatest cellists of her time. The concerts in this cycle are performed using the Montagnana Suggia cello, which once belonged to her and is now preserved in the Porto Museum, a key initiative in preserving the memory of such influential figures, true foundations of much of today’s musical activity.
