BEYRA Laboratório Artístico: Boosting Young Musicians in the Beira Interior Region
BEYRA Laboratório Artístico is an innovative platform dedicated to supporting young musicians at the start of their careers, creating concrete opportunities in the Beira Interior region. The strong public attendance and the growing interest from institutional partners confirm the relevance of this project in an area of enormous economic, social, and cultural potential, but which still lacks structures that promote professionalization and the retention of artistic talent.
At the heart of BEYRA are the artistic residencies, which are not simple internships, but rather intensive periods of professional work. These residencies include the rehearsals and concerts of the Beira Interior Orchestral Ensemble (EOBI) and the pedagogical activities of the Laboratório 10-18, aimed at children and young music students.
The EOBI brings together young musicians aged 18 to 27, selected through rigorous biennial auditions, promoting a system of rotation and equal opportunities. It is not a youth orchestra, but rather a space for artistic affirmation where professionalism prevails from the first rehearsal. The high level of technical and musical demand is reflected in the quality of the concerts presented. We believe that supporting young people means providing them with dignified, challenging, and stimulating working conditions, so that they can fully develop as artists.
Therefore, in addition to fair remuneration, we guarantee the musicians excellent logistical conditions and an enriching repertoire, which prepares them for the challenges of the professional environment. The EOBI has a core formation of 18 musicians – one per section – making each instrumentalist a soloist, in an environment that demands individual excellence and responsibility.
In addition to preserving tradition, the EOBI acts as a driver of contemporary creation, promoting premieres and commissions to composers such as Carlos Azevedo, Luís Tinoco, Luís Cipriano, Vasco Mendonça, Pedro Lima, Carlos Caires and Sara Ross, and collaborating with renowned soloists such as António Rosado, João Barradas and Filipe Quaresma.
BEYRA Laboratório Artístico is thus a dynamic hub for experimentation, training, and creation, boosting a new generation of musicians and placing the Beira Interior on the map of artistic excellence.

BEYRA’s debut concert took place on July 2, 2023, at the Main Church of Fundão. Since that first performance, the Ensemble Orquestral da Beira Interior has presented nine additional concerts in Covilhã, Fundão, and Lisbon, as well as seven chamber music concerts as part of the project “Aqui à Beyra” in Fundão and Lisbon, bringing together more than 40 young musicians and three conductors.
At the same time, Lab 10–18 was held, welcoming dozens of children and young people between the ages of 10 and 18 for practical lessons, open rehearsals, and guided rehearsal sessions.
