Ciclo Suggia

The Suggia Cycle is a series of cello concerts dedicated to celebrating the memory of the illustrious Porto cellist Guilhermina Suggia. Under the artistic direction of cellists Vanessa Pires and Filipe Quaresma, it aims to keep alive the memory of one of Portugal’s most remarkable female musicians and the city of Porto’s connection to her legacy. In 1902, Suggia became the first female soloist to perform at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany, marking a pioneering career that paved the way for future generations of female cellists. Alongside Pablo Casals, with whom she maintained a close relationship between 1906 and 1913, she was considered one of the greatest cellists of her time. The four concerts in this cycle will be performed on the Montagnana “Suggia” cello, which once belonged to her and is now housed at the Porto Museum, a key initiative to preserve the memory of this highly influential figure, a true cornerstone of contemporary musical activity. The guest cellists for this edition are Irene Lima, Jed Barahal, Mats Lidstrom, and Bernardo Ferreira.
