Born in Lisbon, Portugal, composer-pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva has been active in a wide variety of contexts, including jazz, classical, folk, fado, free improvisation or rock. A former concert pianist, a close collaborator of some of the main Portuguese singer-songwriters and one of the key composers of so-called Portuguese jazz, he later embraced spontaneous composition as his paramount creative practice. He also composes chamber music and is himself a prolific songwriter.

His earlier work has been referred to as ‘a completely new, stunningly refreshing approach to creative, improvised music’, as well as ‘an authentic document of his native voice’, while his more recent trio explorations have been noted for their ‘very own aesthetics beyond minimalism, ambient and ECM modes’. As a pianist, he has been described as ‘an extremely inventive and articulate player’, who always puts his ‘splendid technique […] at the service of a well rooted spiritual profoundness.’ Revered by his fellow Portuguese creative musicians, many consider him ‘the greatest Portuguese jazz pianist’ and some have even claimed him to be ‘Portugal’s leading improvisational musician.’

Besides music, he is a poet and a translator, having published nearly as many books as albums.
