Born in Porto in 1963. He gave his first recital at the age of 10, having since performed as a soloist, in chamber music and with orchestra all over the world: Portugal, England, Spain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Poland, USA, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, China, Japan and Thailand.
He was a student of Helena Costa for 10 years. He perfected his studies in the United States with Sequeira Costa, Léon Fleisher and Dimitri Paperno. Participated in Masterclasses by Jurg Demus, Aldo Ciccolini, Karl Engel, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Tatjana Nikolaiewa and Elisabeth Leonskaia. He received a scholarship from the Austrian Ministry of Culture and attended the Salzburg Summer Courses for 10 consecutive years.
In 1983, Pedro Burmester won the 2nd Vianna da Motta prize and, in 1989, he received the special jury prize at the Van Cliburn competition, in the United States of America. He is also distinguished with the Moreira de Sá award and the Robert Schumann silver medal.
She performed at the "92nd Y" in New York, at the Belfast festival, at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, in Cologne, at the Radio France Monstpellier festival. He was invited by Heinrich Schiff to play with the Northern Sinfonia. He has given recitals for Bremen Radio, WDRKoln and has also performed with the Liège Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Zageb Philharmonic, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Warsaw Symphony. He was also invited to play with the London Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Georg Solti.
He shared the stage with more than 50 conductors, among others Martin André, Baldur Bronnimann, Franz Bruggen, Joana Carneiro, Álvaro Cassuto, Gabriel Chmura, Peter Csaba, Manuel Ivo Cruz, Josep Caballé Domenech, Leon Fleisher, Omri Hadari, Leopold Hager, Paavo Jarvi, Jan Latham Konig, Miguel Graça Moura, Gianadrea Noseda, Peter Rundel, Georg Solti, Muhai Tang, Lothar Zagrosek, Michael Zilm.
He was a soloist with practically all Portuguese orchestras (Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra do Norte, Orquestra das Beiras, Orquestra do Algarve, Orquestra da Madeira, Orquestra Filarmonia, Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil and Sinfonieta de Lisboa).
In chamber music training, Pedro Burmester has performed with Mário Laginha, Alexei Eremine, Fausto Neves, António Saiote, Gerardo Ribeiro, Paulo Gaio Lima, Anner Bylsma, Thomas Zehetmair, Quarteto Prazak, Tokyo String Quartett and Augustin Dumay.
In January 2000, Pedro Burmester decided to almost completely interrupt all his teaching and concert activities to dedicate himself entirely to the Casa da Música project, in Porto. Thus, between January 2000 and July 2003 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Casa da Música | Porto 2001, SA being responsible for the Musical Programming area and responsible for the "Casa da Música" project and between 2006 and 2008 he served as Artistic and Education Director of the Casa da Música Foundation with responsibilities in defining the Programming Strategy and Educational Service, in Budget Management of Programming and Production, in defining programming and reception partnership policies and responsible for defining and organizing the resident structures of Fundação Casa da Música.
Since 1989, he has regularly provided training in masterclasses and seminars at various educational institutions and music courses, including: Curso Internacional de Música do Estoril; Academia de Música Pio XII de Vila do Conde; Academia de Música de Espinho; Escola de Música de Linda-a-Velha; Cursos de Música de Fralães; Conservatório de Música do Porto; Porto PianoFest; Festival Internacional de Campos de Jordão; at IKFEM - Festival do Teclado de la Eurociudad Tui. From 2009 he returned to teaching with master's students in piano at the University of Évora and the University of Aveiro. Since 2010, he has been a professor of Piano and Chamber Music at ESMAE - Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo, in Porto, where he had already taught between 1989 and 1999.
He recorded his first album in 1987 with works by Schumann and Schubert (EMI 1987) and since then has released several solo albums, with orchestra and chamber music, highlighting two albums recorded live “3 pianos” with Mário Laginha and Bernardo Sassetti ( Avanti Classic 2005) and “Ao Vivo na Casa da Música” (Casa da Música 2014).
In 1990, he was awarded the Degree of Knight of the Order of Santiago de Espada, by the President of the Republic Mário Soares and in 2006 the President of the Portuguese Republic Jorge Sampaio decorated him with the Degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
