José Pereira began his musical studies at the Lanhelense Musical Band. In 1995, he joined the Professional School of Music in Viana do Castelo to study with Armando Gonzalez, ending the high school with the highest rating (20 values).

He attended master classes with Serguei Arantounian, Nicolas Chumashenco, Swarzburg, Evélio Teles, Anotoli Aníbal Lima, Gerardo Ribeiro, Lee-Chin Siow, Radu, Ilian Gronniz, Serguei Kravechenco, Vadim Répin, Thomas Brandies, among others.

He served as concertmaster in several orchestras, such as the Symphony Orchestra of the Professional School of music in Viana do Castelo, Private Schools Orchestra 99, APROARTE Orchestra (on a Berlin tour), Povoa do Varzim Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra of Oporto Casa da Música. He served in other orchestras including the Académic Federation of Oporto, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Academic Metropolitan Orchestra, Orchestra "Pedro Álvares Cabral", Musik Fabrik in Cologne, where he worked with several and prestigious conductors.

In 2004 he was awarded 1st prize in the “RDP Young Musicians Prize,” having won 2nd prize in 2003 in the same competition.

Currently he is a member of the Moscow Piano Quartet, the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música and is also a founding member and musician of Ensemble Contrapunctus.
